No matter where you are in life’s journey, I believe in the American Dream of owning not just a home, but the perfect home! This is something that I believe everyone should have the right to attain, no matter what their upbringing or circumstances. That is why I have dedicated the majority of my professional life to helping people with their single largest asset, their home.
To me, a person’s home is central to a person’s life experience. It is a place where we spend the majority of our time. A place to raise our families, create community, and build lasting relationships that make for a better world. In this ever-changing and transparent world of information, it’s important to not only understand the information, but to also be able to interpret it so that no matter if you are buying or selling, you make the best possible decisions. That is my mission, and my promise, as your trusted advisor.
I moved to Bellevue from Spokane in 1972, when I was 5 years old, and I grew up in a middle-class neighborhood in Kirkland, WA. At the time, this was the very outskirts of the suburban Eastside. It was here that I learned the importance of hard work and dedication, getting my first job as a paper boy and continuing to dozens of other jobs throughout high school and college. Fortunately, I crossed paths with a number of great teachers, mentors, and coaches, that inspired me at a young age, to confront my fears and reach for higher goals. By the end of High School, I achieved multiple athletic awards as well as leadership positions within my school and community. I even served as an honorary member of the Kirkland Planning commission in 1985, when I was just 18 years old, which was my first introduction into real estate. From there, I went on to the University of Washington, to pursue a degree in Economics and Political Science, and I was fortunate enough to fund the majority of my college by working for companies like Proctor & Gamble and Nordstrom. Two of the most prominent companies in the world. This is where I learned how to sell and create a great customer experience.
I was trained early on in my professional career in both consumer products and medical device sales, and at the early age of 25, found myself managing a multi-million dollar distributor network in Asia for a large Fortune 500 company called Sybron Dental Specialties. I had the amazing experience of working in over 25 countries over the next several years, basically living out of a storage unit in Los Angles for much of that time. It was during those years that I truly learned to listen and adapt to new cultures and ideas. In 1997, with the emergence of the Internet and companies like Amazon, I decided to start one of the first online marketplaces for dental products in the rapidly growing B2B space. I helped raise over $10M and grew the company to over 80 employees on South Lake Union. This is where I caught the entrepreneurial bug, which created an insatiable appetite and curiosity for business and opportunity. Something that still drives me today!
After successfully selling our online company to Verticalnet (VERT-Nasdq) in 2000, I was looking for new opportunities to expand myself as a person and as a professional. That is when I got my real estate license. I wanted an industry that was dynamic and was somewhat insulated to the technology boom, and because real estate is relationship driven, I figured that I would take advantage of my business experience and contacts to leverage that into the fascinating world of real estate. I first started in commercial real estate, as many of my good friends were in that business, but about the same time I was getting my feet wet, 9/11 happened and nearly all the commercial projects in Bellevue were shut down. Realizing this would be a long haul, I decided to re-think my real estate direction and hung my license in residential real estate. In 2005 I moved to Bellevue from Snoqualmie Ridge and became an agent with the most productive office on the Eastside, Windermere Real Estate. Then in 2008, the Great Recession hit and almost overnight, our market turned upside down. In December of 2008, the stock market hit 6500 and we had 13 months supply of homes. Needless to say, this was one of the most stressful times of my life. With virtually no income, 2 young children and a wife at home, I battled through the worst market cycle our real estate market has ever seen, and in 2011, I was the #18 highest producing agent in the entire Northwest Multiple Listing Service with over 15,000 agents. It was those experiences that forced me to dig deep, confront my fears, and focus on the opportunity of the situation, rather than the negativity surrounding all of us at the time. Experiences that I now see as hidden gifts that I carry with me today in the form of resilience, optimism, and a “can do” attitude toward any circumstance.
I realize that everyone has their own story to tell, and that we have many common experiences. Today our market is very dynamic with people moving to Seattle from all over the world. To me, this is very exciting because I truly believe that Seattle is one of the best places in the world to live.
